Scenes From London, Southwark Cathedral, Part 5
Altars behind main altar.
Humble Monument. City Alderman Richard Humble and his two wives Elizabeth and Isabel.

Stone corpse. A nearby plaque reads: "Gisant or recumbent stone effigy of an emaciated corpse in a shroud: 15th Century. The Figure probably represents one of the Augustinian Canons of the Priory of St. Mary Overie. Our ancestors saw nothing wrong in thus representing the human body in decay. On the contrary, reminders of death often seemed right and necessary." I think there is a lot of wisdom in that.

Southwark Cathedral, a gem of Gothic church architecture, is on the south bank near London Bridge. It is a real beauty and is a must see.
